  • Individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2
  • Patients with active eating disorders unless cleared by a mental health professional

Who Should Use Extra Caution?

May require monitoring if you have:

  • GERD, constipation, or gastroparesis
  • History of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or liver conditions
  • Kidney disease
  • Type 2 diabetes on insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Depression or suicidal thoughts
GLP‑1 medications are usually paused 1 week before anesthesia or certain procedures due to risk of aspiration.

Common Side Effects & Safety

Seek medical care immediately for severe abdominal pain, jaundice, or significant mood changes.

Most common:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Bloating or heartburn
  • Headache or fatigue

More serious but less common::

  • Pancreatitis
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Liver inflammation
  • Worsening depression or suicidal thoughts
